Alligators have a broader snout that the crocodile, which has a more pointed snout. Also, the fourth tooth on each side of the lower jaw of the crocodile protrudes outside the snout when their mouth is closed. The American alligator can reach lengths of almost 20 feet, but the average is about 6 to 12 feet. There is another lesser known alligator, the Chinese alligator found in the Yangtze River area in China. The are much smaller, with a maximum length of about 5 feet.
